Starting Wednesday, Sept 5, all ten remaining evening practices (there's only six weeks of the marching season remaining in this short season - the final night practice is Wed, Oct 10), four home football games, and three competitions have required attendance.
Any absence from any other than missing school that day ALL DAY ("if you get sick after school, Mr K needs an email from parents BEFORE practice) must be pre-approved by Mr. Kurilko via EMAIL CONTACT from parents (I must know that your parents know that you are absent BEFORE the practice or event in the case of last minute illness - absence without email will result in a call to the parent during practice) Work schedules, church youth group functions, and other non-school related activities do not excuse any band member from their attendance responsibilities from the graded academic requirements of the band class. "Homework" is also not an excuse - there's plenty of time before and after any practice to do homework. A band class grade is no different than a math, science, or any other grade except that band class attendance at after school, evening, and weekend practices and performances are required in order to give GYM CREDIT as well as an academic grade. Absences due to school functions such as THS sports and other THS sponsored activities as well as rehearsals for high level area honors bands (Detroit Civic Jazz, etc) are exempt from Monday/Wednesday rehearsals (NOT PERFORMANCES!) but will result in doubling up of requirement for attendance for the NEXT practice. Syllabus will be distributed and grading policies explained in class. Nutshell: You joined band to be in band. We have practices and performances. The expectation is that you are there for both. If you are there, you are fine. If you are not, there needs to be an excused parent-made explanation just like how missing a day of school requires parent contact. Comments are closed.
