The second trimester music department concert will occur one week before 2nd tri finals week on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26 @ 7pm in the THS Auditorium.  Free admission.  This concert will be the most formal of all four of our school concerts and will have the theme "Rivers To The Past".  The Chorus will sing five songs, all with lyrics and themes of flowing rivers:

"When I Close My Eyes"
"The Beautiful Rain"
"Down To The River To Pray"
"Riversong"
"Bridge Over Troubled Water"

Three of the superior rating solo and ensemble events who qualified for state S/E festival on March 14 will perform after the chorus.

The THS Concert Band will perform five selections as well in reverse order of the year of composition ("Rivers to the PAST").  Each selection will be explained in advance from the stage by Mr. Kurilko then related directly in terms of musical style and influence to the next piece to be performed.  The five selections have been chosen from five different eras of wind ensemble styles and will be performed in that order:

"Burn" - Roland Barrett (2014)
"American Riversongs" - Pierre LaPlante (1992)
"Chant and Jubilo" - W. Francis McBeth (1062)
"The Black Horse Troop" - John Philip Sousa (1924)
First Suite in E-Flat, Movement III: March - Gustav Holst (1909)

Question:  "Mr. Kurilko, can I be a swimmer and still be in marching band?"

Answer:  Ask any of the band member swimming state champions, 14 'swando' girls league champion swimmers, and 24 boys league champion boys swimmers who are not just in band, but are drum majors, swim team captains, school record holders who are also band members.  Furthermore, if a swimmer can be in band with their before-school and after-school schedules, ANY athlete can be in band.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  I challenge any other band in the midwest to a swim meet, boys or girls.

Congratulations to all the band swimmers and good luck at leagues and states!
